Introduction to Digital Rights Management (DRM)
How Content Creators Protect Web Videos from Piracy
For premium video streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, or online course academies, unauthorized copying and video piracy are major financial threats. To protect intellectual property, developers implement Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems inside web players.
How DRM Encryption Secures Media
DRM adds a highly secure layer of encryption to the video segments. When a browser loads the M3U8 playlist or media link, it cannot play the chunks directly. The player must request a unique decryption key from a secure license server. If the user is authenticated, the browser decrypts the video frames directly inside the device's hardware, preventing standard screen recording software or download tools from stealing the content.
